The reimagined Stony Brook Magazine is a platform from which the university can share the people and initiatives that fuel its unique, global brand narrative. Designed to be a featured channel of our multi-platform rebranding of the university, the publication targeted a broad audience of alumni, students, faculty, staff and partners with content that reached well beyond that of traditional university magazines.
The content strategy of the magazine layered onto our overall “Far Beyond” brand campaign (created in partnership with SimpsonScarborough), forming a channel from which Stony Brook could participate in the broader cultural conversation and illustrate its engagement with the grand challenges facing our world. We positioned it as a competitor to any premiere newsstand publication, featuring timely stories, renowned experts, a bold, image-centric design and writing with an inherently more personal, human perspective.
We developed the inaugural issue from inception to press: including our team of designers, editors, writers, photographers and illustrators, and worked with the university to uncover the stories that dynamically illuminated the brand in its bold, new moment. The content production was fully integrated across a wide range of media, yielding a core set of stories that would be told through different lenses as videos, tv commercials, social media content, print advertising, campus signage and OOH, as well as the featured magazine articles.
The magazine content and template provided the Stony Brook marketing team with the tools that they need to continue the platform for editions to come.

The twenty three campuses of Cal State University serve a unique and ever more important role in the future of California. Their commitment to delivering a quality, affordable education to the people and communities that need it the most paves the way for tangible, positive, and lasting impact on our society and the state we call home.
We teamed up with our friends at SimpsonScarborough to develop a strategy that defines the key ingredients to a “CSU story,” brought to life through the people and perspectives from each university. To launch the campaign, we worked with Cal State and the campuses to uncover the best candidates for a feature story (article, photography, banners) on the newly redesigned calstate.edu, then set out on a Golden State road trip to produce the content.
The talent was inspiring: like Robert Garcia, the Mayor of Long Beach, an alum that’s still teaching at CSULB; and Tim, an undergraduate at Fullerton who was homeless in high school and will be giving back to disadvantaged students through his Masters degree work; or Muhammed, a San Jose State alum who is reinventing the grade school education system in Silicon Valley to grow the next generation of world-changers; and many (many) others.
Our favorite part: Cal State took the template and ran with it, continuing to produce stories that showcase the access, transformation and impact that CSU is empowering students, faculty and alumni with, each and every day.

Death and The Powers Live Performance Media Content

“Does the matter really matter?” asks Simon Powers, Richest Man In The World, lover of Money and Poetry.
“The emotion and intensity of the media content felt as vivid and present as the feelings of the actual humans.”
HEIDI WALESON, WALL STREET JOURNAL
“A must see for anybody who cares about the exciting new techno-driven directions music theater is taking.”
JOHN VON RHEIN, CHICAGO TRIBUNE
Death & The Powers, a sci-fi opera by the MIT Media Lab and the American Repertory Theatre, follows the story of Simon Powers as he leaves his body behind and merges with cyberspace in an attempt to live forever. Helmed by an all-star team, including composer Tod Machover, Broadway director Diane Paulus (Hair), Hollywood production designer Alex McDowell (Minority Report, Fight Club), librettist Robert Pinsky (three time US Poet Laureate), choreographer Karole Armitage the production bowed for its world premiere in Monte Carlo at the historic Salle Garnier, followed by performances in Boston and Chicago.
As the media content designers, we visualized the actor’s live performance into a new, digital persona that inhabited a series of 15-foot-tall media walls on stage. Transforming the inflection of his voice, the aggressiveness of his stance and the rhythm of his heart rate into a new, on-stage persona that embodied everything “Simon,” albeit without all that useless “meat.” Simon spoke visually with playful typography, seduced with dream-like memories, and used symbols and stock footage to deploy his sardonic wit.
“The voice is familiar but the face is unreal”
MIRANDA POWERS, SIMON’S DAUGHTER
Simon’s new consciousness was built from over 500 unique elements that were recombined live onto the screens during the production. The realtime data streams, a motion graphics toolkit and pre-recorded video memories formed a modular system that could be performed and finessed by the actor on stage, every night as a live event.
“Death and the Powers doesn’t point the way to a new era of opera. It’s there. Now.”
DAVID PATRICK STEARNS, PHILADELPHIA INQUIRER
