How can we create an experience that reintroduces the world to the magical art of perfume? When Sephora and Firmenich approached us with the opportunity to add a new dimension to our experience design work, we imagined a mix of cinema, design and technology where your sense of smell can bring image and sound to life. The Sensorium features our two showcase experiences
Life At First Scent and
Lucid Dreams and is the first pop-up exhibit dedicated to scent. Tickets are available
online through November 27th, 2011 and the exhibit is located in the heart of NYC’s Meat Packing District.

Sephora Sensorium — First Scent & Lucid Dreams Montage
Imagine a place where smell, taste, touch, sight and sound become one complete gesture. A 4-D sensorial environment dedicated to the magic and mystery of scent. Sephora & Firmenich
The experiences of Life At First Scent and Lucid Dreams are designed as two parts to a whole. One room places you in a perfumer's first memory of fragrance —a summer at the beach, bacon and biscuits at the breakfast table— and surrounds you with scent, image and sound. Lucid Dreams presents a more intimate and personal multisensory experience where the images and sound literally transform live with your own individual sniff of the perfumer's dream fragrance.
Life At First Scent — Experience Design
In the Life At First Scent room we collaborated with four famous perfumers to bring their earliest scent memories to life in an immersive experience. Six original fragrances combine with large scale video projection in a dynamic forced-perspective hallway that transports you back through 6:01AM, Bacon & Biscuits, Spring Is Back, Summer Vacation, Weekend Splendor and Warm Embrace.
In Lucid Dreams, visitors can affect floating holographic dream images inspired by Firmenich's master perfumers. Using a high tech flower sculpture, the images transform based on the power of the individual's sniff - triggered by the unique sound transmitted by the physical act of smelling. The technical production of the interactive elements involved significant R-and-D including an examination of wind velocity and other triggers before landing on an auditory solution.
Lucid Dreams — Behind The Scenes
Our multidisciplinary team designed the complete Lucid Dreams experience including each room's architecture, short films, floor-to-ceiling motion graphics, glowing sniff-registering flowers and the software that drives the interaction. Every step of the creative process was taken hand-in-hand with the perfumers at Firmenich to ensure a truly integrated and multisensory experience the brings their fragrances to life.
