This episode of Onward California features Dawn Sumner, a geologist on the Mars Curiosity Rover mission and professor at the University of California, Davis, who uses a virtual reality cave to explore surface composition of Earth and Mars. Her work visualizes large data sets, like the locations and frequencies of earthquakes, and searches for clues on the red planet that could reveal the origins of Earth.

“For all of our history, there have always been people going out to find something new, learn something new, then bring it home to expand culture. That’s what science is all about.”

Onward California is a documentary series that takes you into the lives of University of California faculty and researchers and illuminates how their work is impacting Californians each and every day.
